An Ode to Spain: First Viewing of The Nao Trinidad, Spanish Wine Tasting, and Live Music!

09/18/2023 06:00 PM - 09:00 PM ET

Description

Join us for an evening of history, Spanish wine, tapas, and live music at the HRMM! The Nao Trinidad is sailing all of the way from Spain to the Hudson River! The ship is a Spanish-built replica of the 16th-Century tall ship Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan captained during the first circumnavigation of the world.

We are giving our HRMM members and volunteers the opportunity to take the first Kingston tour of the ship and to enjoy a special evening of wine and live music with us!

This visit to America celebrates 500 years since the world’s first circumnavigation of the globe. A flagship of the Magellan-Elcano expedition—the first race of five ships around the
world.—the Nao Trinidad was led by Magellan from 1519-1522, and during those years it became one of only two ships to successfully travel from Sevilla, Andalusia to the Spice Islands. The replica is a magnificent full-size ship of 200 tons, 29 m. long and 8 m. wide, four masts, five sails and five decks, built with exquisite workmanship in iroko and pine wood. The ship’s replica construction took 14 years to make and concluded on March 11, 2018 and now serves as a floating museum of Spanish maritime heritage, and has already visited dozens of ports in Spain, Mexico, the United States and Europe. Visitors will be able to tour four decks, and view the captain’s cabin and living quarters, giving them a glimpse into what life was like onboard a 16th-Century ship and how it is to live today on a historical ship of that time. They’ll learn about seamanship directly from the crew.
