Sunflower Relief Woodcarving for Beginners

05/16/2026 08:00 AM - 05:00 PM ET

Description

Get introduced to the art of woodcarving by carving a sunflower relief using a chisel and mallet under the guidance of special visiting instructor Rick Liegl. A co-founder of Colonial Crafts of Connecticut, Rick is a master craftsman who will show you how to lay out a design using a pencil, ruler and compass. Then you will learn and practice traditional carving techniques in an oak panel and carve your own wall hanging to take home.

A basic understanding of woodworking is helpful but not necessary. Rick will provide a piece of oak for each student to carve, as well as carving chisels and mallets.

About the Instructor: Colonial Crafts of Connecticut was founded by friends Anne Marie Elder and Rick Liegl who have a shared passion for connecting people through traditional handcraft. What began as a way to share knowledge about spoon and bowl carving, green woodworking, blacksmithing, broom making, basketry, and other pre‑industrial skills has grown into a vibrant community of makers and instructors.

Today, Colonial Crafts serves as a resource for museums, historical societies, and cultural events throughout New England, helping to preserve and promote the region’s craft traditions. Through monthly open studio meetups and hands‑on workshops, we aim to build a welcoming community where people can learn, create, and keep these timeless skills alive.
