Live Edge Cutting Board and Knife Rack

Date: Saturday, December 4, 2021, 10:00AM–4:00PM
Instructor: Wayne Ford
Class Size: 4
Registration Deadline: Saturday, November 27, 2021

Join instructor Wayne Ford for this one day class creating a matching live edge cutting board and knife rack. Each student will get to pick a flitch of locally harvested and kiln dried hardwood. The students will then use draw knives, sanders and other hand tools to remove any bark and smooth the live edge. The piece will then be cut to the final dimensions at the preference of the student and planed and smoothed. Finally, students will embed magnets in their piece to create a beautiful magnetic knife rack that can be easily mounted to their kitchen wall. Each student will leave with their own cutting board and knife rack to add to their epicurean kitchen. Live edge pieces are unique in that their construction does not take away from the wood's original shape and natural appearance. This class takes place in the classroom at the HRMM Wooden Boat School located at 86 Rondout Landing in Kingston's historic Rondout district.

Joint Instruction - For an additional fee, students are welcomed to bring a second builder to the class. This is a great opportunity to learn and have fun together. Joint instruction must be accompanied with someone taking the full instruction and purchasing a kit.

The Wooden Boat School was founded by the Hudson River Maritime Museum in 2015 to preserve the maritime craft traditions of the Hudson Valley and to teach a hands-on interpretation of the living history of the Hudson River. The school offers diverse curriculum and opportunities which inspire skills in woodworking, boat building, and maritime craft. Also available are restoration services for wooden boats. A class calendar and details can be found at www.hrmm.org/woodworking.
