Make your valentine a truly unique gift this year. Instructor Becky Sellinger will guide students through a 1-day class making sailor's valentines. A sailor's valentine is a form of shellcraft originally made between 1830 and 1890, and they were designed to be brought home from a sailor's voyage at sea and given to a loved one. Students will craft traditional sailor's valentines which are typically octagonal, glass fronted, hinged wooden boxes displaying intricate symmetrical designs composed entirely of small sea shells of various colors glued onto a backing. Patterns often feature a centerpiece such as a compass rose or a heart design, hence the name. In some cases the small shells are used to spell out a motto or sentimental message. This class takes place in the shop at the HRMM Wooden Boat School located at 86 Rondout Landing in Kingston's historic Rondout district.

The Wooden Boat School was founded by the Hudson River Maritime Museum in 2015 to preserve the maritime craft traditions of the Hudson Valley and to teach a hands-on interpretation of the living history of the Hudson River. The school offers diverse curriculum and opportunities which inspire skills in woodworking, boat building, and maritime craft. Also available are restoration services for wooden boats. A class calendar and details can be found at www.hrmm.org/woodworking.
