US Sailing Basic Keelboat is a 21-hour class taught by US Sailing-Certified instructors and covers many topics which a competent sailor will need to master.  Six categories are included:  sailing concepts, sailing preparation, first sail, after the first sail, sailing environment, and safety and emergencies. The course will use the "Basic Keelboat" textbook published by the United States Sailing Association, which is included with tuition. The class will be taught primarily on the water, on board the Sailing School keel boats, with some land-based "chalk talks" at the Hudson River Maritime Museum's Wooden Boat School building.  Students will practice their on the water skills to gain confidence in operating their vessels.

At the end of the course, qualified students will be encouraged to take the test to qualify for the US Sailing Basic Keelboat certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
We wish to accommodate everyone, but participants need to be physically able to participate in our sailing classes. Students will need to walk unassisted down a wobbly dock, lift their legs two feet high to step over lifelines when boarding boats, and be able to lift 25 pounds unassisted. Sailing is a sport and requires some agility and quick reflexes. If you are unsure whether you can handle these physical requirements, please reach out to our Sailing Program Director at jsterling@hrmm.org to discuss.

COVID PRECAUTIONS
Safety of our students, staff, and volunteers is our top priority. As the date of a class approaches, we will evaluate guidance and restrictions and reach out to our students if there is anything that will affect their experience. We list current COVID guidance and restrictions on the Sailing School's homepage at www.hrmm.org/sailing-school

CANCELLATION POLICY
Full refunds will be offered for cancellations that occur 30 days or more before a program's registration deadline (if no deadline, the first day of the program). Cancellations between 30 and 7 days will be offered a 50% refund or credit toward another class. Cancellations after the registration deadline or within 7 days of the first day of class (whichever comes first) will not be refunded.

WEATHER CONDITIONS
Generally, the Sailing School does not cancel classes. We sail in light rain and a variety of wind and weather conditions. We do stay ashore if conditions are dangerous, i.e. squall or thunder and lightning. In the event we cannot sail, we will present relevant topics and activities on land until the weather conditions improve.
