Description

Course: Youth Sailing Program Week 5
Dates: Week 5 will run Monday- Friday, August 14 - 18, 2023,  9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Instructor: TBD
Class Size: 18
Prerequisites: None
Registration Deadline: Friday, Aug. 4, 2023

Join us for this exciting week-long sailing program where students aged 10-17 learn the basics of sailing on 8' Optimist Prams, 14' & 16' Capri sailboats, 14' High Performance 420 sailboats and other sailboats. Each day will feature Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) workshops, short "chalk talks," and learning activities on land and on-the-water instruction with games, drills, and informal races on the Rondout Creek and the Hudson River. The goal at the end of each week is for all students to feel comfortable sailing and to become capable, safe basic sailors.  Because each week will consist of mixed ages and experience levels, our U.S. Sailing certified instructors will adapt the program to match the needs of the students. Intermediate and advanced sailors will be encouraged to sail more challenging boats and learn higher level skills. Covid-safe procedures such as mask-wearing, staying outdoors, and working in pods will be utilized if needed.

Students may register for one or multiple weeks, and weeks do not need to be consecutive.

COVID PRECAUTIONS
Safety of our students, staff, and volunteers is our top priority. As the date of a class approaches, we will evaluate guidance and restrictions and reach out to our students if there is anything that will affect their experience. We list current COVID guidance and restrictions on the Sailing School's homepage at www.hrmm.org/sailing-school

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
We wish to accommodate everyone, but participants need to be physically able to participate in our sailing classes. Students will need to walk unassisted down a wobbly dock, lift their legs two feet high to step over lifelines when boarding boats, and be able to lift 25 pounds unassisted. Sailing is a sport and requires some agility and quick reflexes. If you are unsure whether you can handle these physical requirements, please reach out to our Sailing Program Director at jsterling@hrmm.org to discuss.

CANCELLATION POLICY
Full refunds will be offered for cancellations that occur 30 days or more before a program's registration deadline (if no deadline, the first day of the program). Cancellations between 30 and 7 days will be offered a 50% refund or credit toward another class. Cancellations after the registration deadline or within 7 days of the first day of class (whichever comes first) will not be refunded.

WEATHER CONDITIONS
Our youth sailing program runs every day, regardless of the weather. We sail in light rain and a variety of wind conditions. If the weather is dangerous, we will stay ashore and do workshops, activities, chalk talks,  drills, learning games, etc.
