Make Your Own Hinged Box

In this course, Annie Raso brings her years of experience to guide you through creating a beautiful, handmade box that is constructed without the use of fasteners. Students will learn how to make a variety of cuts and assemble a box with mitered corners and decorative spline joinery. In addition, students will also learn how to cut a lid from the box and use hand tools to mount brass hinges. Lastly, a lesson in finishing and some take-home finishing supplies will be provided.

This is an intermediate class: students must have experience with the table saw, chop saw, bandsaw, and hand tools.

Skills students will acquire through completion of this course: 

Cutting rabbets and dados with the dado blade
Cutting miters
Keyed miter joinery
Tongue and groove joinery
Mounting hinges
Sanding and finishing techniques

Instructor: Annie Raso is an artist and designer who moved to the Hudson Valley after living in NYC for almost two decades. Annie learned the basics of woodworking at SUNY New Paltz, and continued to hone her craft in the city, where she spent years running community wood shops at Makeville and Makerspace, teaching woodworking classes, selling tools at Tools for Working Wood, working at furniture companies, and freelancing. When she’s not woodworking, she enjoys taking her cat for walks, procuring fine vegan cheeses, and sewing her own clothes.
