Family/Group Build: Bird Feeder

Did you know that many birds common to the Hudson Valley live here year round and do not migrate? Species like ravens, magpies, jays, black-capped chickadees, and northern cardinals overwinter and, even as the snow falls and seed-bearing plants go dormant, these birds need to eat. At the same time, other familiar birds who live here from the spring through fall are actually in decline: the American robin, barn swallow, Carolina chickadee (above), house wrens and many other types of wren, northern flicker, and purple martin are among them.

Join us as winter approaches to build a bird feeder from scratch. Your feeder will provide an opportunity not only to help sustain bird populations but also to observe birds up close. Woodworker Wayne Ford will guide your family or group through this easy beginner project. Staff from the Maritime Museum will also tell you a little bit about these common local birds. You'll also get a handout sheet covering what each of them likes and doesn't like to eat, with tips for how to maintain your feeder. Bring your family or small group of friends for this fun, hands-on build.

Note: When you purchase a ticket for your group or family, you can bring up to 4 guests. (Due to safety and space factors, each group is limited to 5 members total.)

Instructor: Wayne Ford is a master woodworker and shipwright with extensive timber framing experience. His experience includes participating in the restoration of the sloop Woody Guthrie and the schooner Clearwater. He teaches a wide range of woodworking classes, YouthBoat boatbuilding, timber framing, and special project classes at the Wooden Boat School.
