Introduction to Square Rule Timber Framing

This 2-day course is designed for students who seek hands-on experience in building timber frame structures. You will learn how these structures are built, and assist in the construction of a square rule, post-and-beam timber frame structure on the HRMM campus. The group will cut mortise and tenon joints and join the structural frames. 

This course is co-taught by master shipwright and woodworker Wayne Ford, whose decades of experience include the restoration of the Hudson River sloops Clearwater and Woody Guthrie. It is suitable for both beginners as a way to build and practice fundamental skills, as well as for more advanced students wishing to strengthen and expand their existing knowledge.

Instructor: Wayne Ford is a master woodworker and shipwright with extensive timber framing experience. His experience includes participating in the restoration of the sloop Woody Guthrie and the schooner Clearwater. He teaches a wide range of woodworking classes, YouthBoat boatbuilding, timber framing, and special project classes at the Wooden Boat School.
