Hands-On Wooden Boat Restoration: Rascal Replank

11/07/2023 10:00 AM - 11/28/2023 04:00 PM ET

Description

Each month, the museum highlights the restoration efforts on one boat in our collection. For four weeks, we offer the public a hands-on seminar with master shipwright and Wooden Boat School lead instructor Wayne Ford that focuses on the restoration needs of that vessel. For the month of November, Wayne will lead participants in replacing a plank on our 1950s racing sloop "Rascal." The history of this unique boat, with her distinctive West coast design, is unknown, but her speed and grace are unmistakable, even when hauled out in our yard. Join us for as many of these Tuesday sessions as you like, whether just one or up to four.

When the replanking is finished, the refastening that is already underway continues: the galvanized screws that remain from an ill-advised prior refastening will be replaced with copper rivets, which means extracting the old hardware, plugging the holes with cedar bungs and epoxy, and fairing.

Be a part of this exciting team effort to get Rascal out on the water once again, as you soak up decades of wooden boat knowledge and experience from Wayne Ford. Following this series, we hope to enlist a crew of folks who have been trained through these restoration classes to not only continue the work of getting her seaworthy again, but to be the first to sail in her as she is relaunched.
