Build a Custom Shelf
Description
Use that bare wall space to proudly display your favorite books or objects on a shelf you designed and built. In this beginner-level class we will delve into designing shelves that consider load capacity, wall-stud spacing, material choice, and finish selection. You can choose brackets or floating shelf hardware.
You will practice many skills that can be applied to all fields of woodworking: design, layout, marking, power tool use, gluing up, and assembly.
You should have a wall in mind on which to place the shelf. Design depends a lot on wall composition and stud spacing. Use a stud-finder beforehand to verify and measure stud spacing, and measure the wall dimensions. NOTE: If the wall is plaster over brick, fastening the shelf will be more difficult, requiring specialty fasteners and a hammer drill. Due to the basic nature of this class, we ask that you choose a wall that has wood studding.
