Intro to Spindle Turning

06/14/2025 09:00 AM - 05:00 PM ET

Description

In this introductory woodturning class, you'll be guided by professional turner and woodworker Peter Moffa as you learn the basics of turning a spindle. Spindles are used in furniture making and architecture as both decorative and support elements and allow for a lot of creativity. Topics in this one-day, beginner-level class will include:

  • Safety basics: safety gear, positioning the body, best practices
  • Grinding / Tool Sharpening: different sharpening tools; techniques to prepare tools for hardwoods vs. softwoods
  • Getting to know the lathe and accoutrements: securing the work piece; centering; how to adjust out of center material; setting the tool rest; spindle speeds; using a story stick to duplicate multiple turnings; using calipers for proper depth of cuts
  • Turning tools: roughing gouge, spindle gouge, parting tool, and skew; flexibility and limitations of the tools; students practice setting up their project, roughing out, and practice using the tools making beads, coves, shoulders, parts, urns, columns etc.
  • Hands-on practice: students spend the rest of the day creating their own design to work on, or just continue honing their skills with feedback on their technique.
