Basic Fiberglass Boat Repair

Got a boat in need of some love and not sure where to start? This hands-on class will focus on both structural and cosmetic work on fiberglass boats. Students will learn to safely handle fiberglass and resins, and practice on boats actively used by the sailing school at HRMM.

This is primarily a skills-based class where you will get to practice: damage assessment, planning repairs, making forms, surface prep, application of resin to fiberglass, materials handling, leveling, and gelcoat application. All materials will be provided, and beginners are welcome.

Instructor: Max Smith is a multidisciplinary craftsman with ten years of experience in woodworking in various forms, stringed instrument repair and making, piano tuning and repair, boatbuilding, cabinetmaking, and as Maintenance Coordinator for the Beacon Sloop Club. He is a full time instructor at HRMM and has participated as a skills demonstrator at the Eric Sloane Museum in Kent, CT. Max frequently sails his 15' Goat Island Skiff, inviting friends and teaching them the basics of sailing.
