First Sail 2026

This class is a perfect opportunity to get out onto the Hudson River for a two-hour Introductory sail aboard the historic Catboat Tidbit with a certified instructor. Participants do not need any sailing experience to sign up, but experienced sailors are also welcome to join us. Learn the basics of sailing and enjoy two hours on the beautiful Rondout Creek and Hudson River. US Sailing Certified Instructors will create a unique experience for the participants in each class.

General Public (Age 13+): $85
HRMM Indivudal/Sustaining Members & Above (Age 13+): $76.50*

Child** (Age 5-12): 20% Discount.  Please email jsterling@hrmm.org and ask for coupon code before you register a child. 

Discounts show up at the end of the registration process. 

*We encourage you to become a member (for as little as $40/year or $5/month) to receive discounted class tuition. You must be a current member on the date of registering to receive your discount. **Children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Children younger than 5 cannot participate in this class.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
We wish to accommodate everyone, but participants need to be physically able to participate in our sailing classes. Students will need to walk unassisted down a wobbly dock and lift their legs two feet high to step over lifelines when boarding boats.  Sailing is a sport and requires some agility and quick reflexes. If you are unsure whether you can handle these physical requirements, please reach out to our Sailing Program Director at jsterling@hrmm.org to discuss how we may accommodate you. 

CANCELLATION POLICY
Full refunds will be offered for cancellations that occur 30 days or more before a program's registration deadline (if no deadline, the first day of the program). Cancellations between 30 and 7 days will be offered a 50% refund or credit toward another class. Cancellations after the registration deadline or within 7 days of the first day of class (whichever comes first) will not be refunded.

WEATHER CONDITIONS
We sail in light rain and a variety of wind and weather conditions. We do stay ashore if conditions are dangerous, i.e. squall or thunder and lightning.

In the event we cannot sail, we will send an email two hours or more before the start of your First Sail class to cancel your First Sail and offer options for rescheduling. 

ABOUT THE SAILING SCHOOL
The Sailing School at Hudson River Maritime Museum offers a variety of sailing experiences for youth and adult students. Classes are available for every level of experience and include 1-day introductory sessions, youth groups, and certification opportunities.
